Test Drive the 2019 Mazda3 in Rochester,MN
Sleek sedans still have a place on the roads, even in a world where crossovers are king. Enter the Mazda3, a time-honored flagship sedan of the automaker, which offers outstanding performance, a comfortable ride, and great technology options. It's been fully redesigned from the ground up this year, to offer an even more refined driving experience. Let's take some time to examine the exterior trim levels, engine and power, performance, interior, and safety features of the elegant, sporty, and practical compact Mazda3 sedan.
Trim Levels (Exterior)
The Mazda3 is available in four trim levels (which Mazda calls “packages”) and two configurations: small sedan or hatchback. The base level trim package offers exterior features like 16-inch alloy wheels and LED headlights, daytime running lights, and tail lights. It's available in either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, with AWD available on all but the base trim. The Select trim package ups the ante to 18-inch wheels with automatic headlights and automatic wipers.
While the Preferred package doesn't have additional exterior features, the Premium package offers adaptive headlights, sunroof, and in the hatchback configuration, black wheels.

Engine (Power)
There's only a single engine for the Mazda3. It's powered at all trim levels by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine which puts out 186 horsepower and generates 186 feet per pound in torque. It's matched to a six-speed automatic transmission, though if you choose the front-wheel-drive hatchback at the Premium level, you can opt for a manual transmission.
Performance
The new Mazda3 offers a number of important tuning upgrades for better performance. The chassis has been redesigned for better aerodynamics, the telescoping steering wheel extends an extra 0.8 inches, and the former multilink rear suspension has been replaced with a basic torsion-beam axle. Test drives by Car and Driver revealed a skidpad grip of 0.87g and a full stop from 70mph in 165 feet. The publication also notes a very natural steering progression.
Interior
The interior design is elegant and refined, with Mazda completely redesigning the front seats to offer increased comfort and more support. In terms of technology, the base level gives you a rearview camera, driver information screen, push-button start, and an infotainment system driven by an 8.8-inch display with Bluetooth, 8 speakers, voice commands, HD radio, and dual USB ports.
Stepping up to the Select package nets you keyless entry, dual-zone automatic climate control, leather steering wheel and simulated leather upholstery, back armrest, and smartphone app integration. The Preferred gives you a power driver seat with driver memory functions, heated front seats, and Bose audio with 12 speakers and satellite radio tuner. The top package nets you a heads-up display, full leather upholstery, and paddle shifters on automatic models.
