2021 Mazda CX-5
The SUV market continues to expand, with new models being released and existing ones improving each year. Mazda introduced its second-generation CX-5 in 2017 and, for 2021, manages to refine an already impressive vehicle.
Trim Levels (Exterior)
Mazda offers the 2021 CX-5 in five trims: the Sport, Touring, Grand Touring, Grand Touring Reserve, and Signature. The basic Sport trim has an exciting list of exterior amenities, such as 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, daytime running lights, a rearview camera, body-colored side mirrors with LED turn signal indicators, a body-colored roof spoiler, and more. Features for higher trims include auto-leveling LED headlights, heated side mirrors, larger alloy wheels, a power liftgate, a power-sliding moonroof, and a windshield wiper de-icer.
Carbon Edition and Carbon Edition Turbo models enhance the car's exterior aesthetic by adding a black trim and wheels as well as a special polymetal gray exterior.
Engine (Power)
The standard engine for the 2021 Mazda CX-5 is a powerful 2.5-liter four-cylinder with an output of up to 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque. While this power should be more than enough for most drivers, those who feel they need more push can choose the optional engine, a similarly sized but turbocharged inline-four with up to 250 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque.
Performance
When equipped with the standard 187-horsepower engine, the 2021 Mazda CX-5 can go from zero to 60 mph in less than nine seconds, which is a good time for a car this spacious and comfortable. The turbocharged engine, however, pushes it from zero to 60 in only 6.2 seconds, a better time than many smaller sedans and hatchbacks on the market.
Interior
The 2021 Mazda CX-5 not only looks great on the interior but is also very comfortable. The well-tuned suspensions ensure a smooth ride, while the excellent cabin insulation keeps most road, wind, and engine noises outside. The comfortable seats and wide door openings make it easy for passengers of all ages to get in and out, and the driver's seat offers plenty of visibility.
On the tech side, the CX-5's infotainment interface has received a major upgrade for the 2021 model, featuring a large 10.25-inch display with improved graphics and an intuitive menu. Those who want to pair their smartphones can do so via Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, USB ports, Mazda Connected Services, a Wi-Fi hot spot, and Bluetooth. Other available technology features include rear USB ports, a 10-speaker Bose audio system, satellite radio, navigation, and dual-zone automatic climate control.
Safety Features
SUVs are often used as family vehicles, so safety is and always will remain a priority for both manufacturers and buyers. The 2021 Mazda CX-5 is a very reliable vehicle in case of a collision, with the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration giving it a top five-star safety rating. Most driver aids, including forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist system, adaptive cruise control, and the blind-spot and rear cross-traffic alert systems, are available as standard, underlining Mazda's commitment to passenger safety.
