What is Mazda Skyactiv Technology?

Mazda Skyactiv

Vehicle manufacturers are constantly looking for ways to improve the driver experience, from handling to fuel efficiency, comfort features to technology, and everything in between. Mazda introduced SKYACTIV in 2011 and has spent the past ten years perfecting this system. You may have heard this term tossed around before, or maybe you're hearing it for the first time. What is Mazda SKYACTIV technology?

SKYACTIV Engines

First up is the SKYACTIV-G, a direct-injection engine offering the world's highest gasoline compression ratio of 14:1, which significantly improves overall engine efficiency. This technology provides a 15% increase in torque and fuel efficiency thanks to the high compression combustion. The increased torque improves everyday driving at low and mid-engine speeds. The high compression ratio is created by a 4-2-1 exhaust system, multihole injectors, cavity pistons, and other innovative technologies designed to increase the compression ratio.

Next up is the SKYACTIV-D engine, the diesel engine for the SKYACTIV line. Also featuring the best in the world compression ratio of 14:1, the SKYACTIV-D engine provides a 20% improvement in fuel economy while meeting or exceeding exhaust emission standards worldwide. The high-efficiency turbocharger of the SKYACTIV-D delivers excellent acceleration and a snappy, smooth response.

The jewel of the SKYACTIV line of engines is the SKYACTIV-X engine, the first commercial gasoline engine to use homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) SKYACTIV-X. HCCI happens when the fuel-air mixture spontaneously ignites when the piston compresses. The SKYACTIV-X also features Spark Controlled Compression Ignition. This first-of-its-kind combustion method uses spark plug ignition to manage compression ignition giving marked improvements in several performance parameters. The SKYACTIV-X combines the benefits of a traditional gasoline engine with those of a compression ignition diesel engine to produce expansiveness at high RPMs, cleaner exhaust emissions, along with superior initial response and fuel economy.

SKYACTIV Transmissions

Part of the SKYACTIV technologies are two different transmissions. The first being the SKYACTIV-DRIVE automatic transmission which provides smooth shifting and excellent fuel economy at low speed. Utilizing a lockup range over 80% gives the SKYACTIV-DRIVE a natural sense usually only found in manual transmissions. SKYACTIV offers a manual transmission called the SKYACTIV-MT, a compact and light system offering a perfect mix of premier fuel efficiency and crisp shifting mechanism reminiscent of a sports car.

SKYACTIV Platform and Dynamics

The platform on which the SKYACTIV technologies are built consists of a light but rigid framework. Mazda trimmed over 100 kilograms of weight from the car to help create a sense of oneness with the car and driver. The light but robust SKYACTIV-BODY combines with the lightweight SKYACTIV-CHASSIS featuring completely redesigned suspensions to create a feeling of oneness with the vehicle. The final piece to the SKYACTIV technology is SKYACTIV-VEHICLE DYNAMICS which provides integrated control of many individual components such as body, chassis, transmission, and engine to reach complete optimization of the vehicle's performance.

Maintaining Your Mazda's SKYACTIV Engine: Service Tips

Mazda's SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY achieves a rare balance of excellent performance and gas mileage. You'll keep your Mazda both powerful and highly fuel efficient with the following Mazda SKYACTIV maintenance. more Maintaining Your Mazda's SKYACTIV Engine: 6 Service Tips Check Your Coolant Continuous cooling is a must with any combustion engine. The very effective cooling system in your Mazda depends on the coolant, so check this vital fluid monthly and flush it every two or three years. If your coolant ever turns brown from contamination, you'll need to flush it early. Test Your Cooling System The rest of the cooling system, which includes the radiator, thermostat, cooling fans, heater core, and hoses, must be pressure-tested at least once a year to make sure each component, seal, and connection is sturdy. This test will uncover any worn parts or nascent leaks so they can be fixed and the engine protected. Change Your Motor Oil Motor oil lubricates the engine's internal components and minimizes friction. In doing so, it helps keep heat under control. Your engine will need fresh oil every six months or so. If you're a particularly active driver or drive in conditions that strain your engine, schedule more frequent oil changes. The last thing you want is to leave it too long, which would allow the oil to age and the engine to wear prematurely. Look for Oil or Coolant Leaks Leaking oil or coolant would put your engine at immediate risk. It's a good idea to build a habit of checking for leaks. Glance under your car for puddles on the garage floor. Also, raise the hood to check if you can see or smell leaking fluid; coolant has a sweet smell, and leaking motor oil will often create a burning smell as it runs over heated components. Replace Worn Spark Plugs A few parts inside the engine must be replaced occasionally. Spark plugs will usually last at least 30,000 miles and sometimes much longer, depending on the plug type and your driving habits. You'll also need to replace ignition coils and fuel filters periodically. Book Yearly Tune-Ups If you schedule a yearly engine tune-up, our technicians can keep an eye on all engine parts and carry out timely replacements. We'll check the oil, oil filter, coolant, ignition coils, spark plugs, fuel filter, and run a full diagnostic test. Schedule Routine Mazda SKYACTIV Maintenance Our technicians are factory-trained specialists in Mazda vehicles and SKYACTIV engines. With a regular preventative maintenance schedule, we'll keep your engine running smoothly with very few faults. We can also keep track of your visits and politely remind you whenever it's time for an oil change or tune-up. Bring your car to Rochester Mazda in Rochester, MN.
