Rochester, MN, founded in 1854, is the third-largest city in Minnesota. With a history of over 160 years, it’s not surprising that we have numerous must-see places for visitors. 4 Must-See Local Attractions in and Around Rochester, MN

Soldier Field Veterans Memorial

This calm and peaceful site was built for, and dedicated to, the memory of fallen US soldiers from Southeast Minnesota. The Wall of Remembrance lists the names of 2,500 servicemembers from within 50 miles of Rochester who gave their lives in service to the United States in wars from the Civil War to the present. Fifty tall trees surround the memorial, and a Walk of Remembrance remembers 6,300 fallen US Veterans.

Military scenes, insightful quotations, and historical information are carved into the marble walls detailing the history of the United States. This beautiful site is open daily till 10 pm and is located at 300 7th Street SE.

Douglas Trail

Enjoy the sun and fresh air, and try this 12.5-mile multi-use trail that starts in Northwestern Rochester, extends through the town of Douglas, and ends at Pine Island. The trail is paved, flat, and straight, as it is based on an old railway bed. Avid walkers, runners, and cyclists can all enjoy his trail as it passes through farmland, woodland, and prairie covered with wildflowers. Horse riders, and in winter snowmobilers, have access to a parallel trail.

Silver Lake

Another site of amazing beauty, this man-made lake is a perfect place to spend a day. Whether you prefer relaxation under a shady tree, or boating on the lake, this is a venue to relax and enjoy life. Fun for the whole family, there are areas to cycle, skateboard, or play baseball. Picnic tables are available, and you can rent paddle boats and kayaks to enjoy the lake up close.

Numerous geese make their home here, and feeding the birds by the lake is very popular, with both visitors and the geese themselves. Silver Lake can be found at 800 West Silverlake Drive NE.

The Plummer Building

A part of the world-famous Mayo Clinic, this stunning building was built in 1928 and is still in use by the clinic today. Named for Henry S. Plummer, M.D. the physician administrator who created many of the systems still in use at the Mayo Clinic today, this iconic building is a National Historic Landmark.

The third floor is a museum and contains the original offices of the Mayo brothers, books, and historic artifacts. For a trip back into medical history’s past, be sure to visit 200 1st Street, SW.
