All models in Mazda’s famous MX5 lineup are gorgeous and an absolute joy to drive, but the Miata RF edition has onlookers stopping in their tracks. It sets itself apart from the standard MX-5 with a power-folding solid roof that gives this vehicle the appearance of a luxury hardtop coupe. The 2021 Mazda MX5 Miata is getting rave reviews from critics – keep reading to find out why!

Mazda’s Bestselling Two-Passenger Roadster

The MX-5 is well known among sports car enthusiasts for its sleek design and impressive handling. Outfitted with a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine and rear-wheel drive, this is a lightweight and agile car that can get to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds.

The RF version, with its retractable hard top and stunning design elements, delivers a ride that manages to be exhilarating and comfortable at the same time. This car’s very firm shocks allow drivers to sail over bumpy roadways. The steering is highly responsive and can handle the sharpest of turns. This isn’t just a beautiful sports car, but one that is immensely fun to drive.

Pricing on a 2021 Miata RF

The RF version of the MX-5 is available in two trims: Club ($34,040) and Grand Touring ($35,520). Both versions are rear-wheel-drive and powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. The powertrain can be paired to either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission.

The Club trim comes with plenty of premium standard features such as heated seats, keyless entry, a nine-speaker Bose sound system, and loads of connectivity bells and whistles. An upgrade to the even more luxurious Grand Touring adds leather upholstery, a navigation system, automatic climate control, and some extra driver assist features that are nice to have.

Favorite Features on the 2021 Mazda MX5 Miata

Buyers who opt for the RF Club model with a manual transmission will be getting some very high-end features typically found on only the most luxe sports cars. Limited slip deferential, a shock tower brace, engine sound enhancer, and sport-tuned suspension with Bilstein shock absorbers all work together to create a driving experience that rivals the most premium sports coupes on the market.

The Most High-End Safety Technology

Both RF trims comes with forward collision warning, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. The Grand Touring adds some extra-premium driver aids such as automatic headlights and wipers, auto-dimming mirrors, and adaptive headlights that swivel to illuminate the road as you turn.

What About Fuel Economy?

Being such a small and lightweight vehicle, the fuel economy on any Miata MX5 is excellent by sports car standards. The MX5’s 2.0-liter engine earns an EPA rating of 26 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway (these numbers are based on a Miata with an automatic transmission). RF models are slightly heavier than the soft tops, but this only affects fuel economy by a very small margin.
