The Douglas State Trail is a path of more than 12 miles that runs through incredible Minnesota scenery. Many people use this trail for various kinds of recreation.
Accessible for All
You can bring the whole family when you visit for recreation on the trail because the surface of the main trail is paved and does not include hills or difficult walking conditions. Whether you and your group prefer to walk or jog the trail, or you’d rather bring your bicycles, the path is easy to use. You can even use in-line skates.
Strollers and wheelchairs will have no trouble on the path, so babies and people with limited physical abilities can also join the fun.
Agricultural Land
One type of scenery you will see as you walk the trail is the vast agricultural land that has been used in farming for many generations. You will be able to imagine life as it was long ago when you see where people have been participating in this rural occupation over the years. Some of this farmland is still currently in use, and you will be able to see crops growing and land being prepared for seasonal growing activity.
Bridges
The trail crosses several small creeks as well as the Zumbro River. Several picturesque bridges present great photo opportunities and places to stop and reflect on the beauty of nature.
Forests
See the many different varieties of trees that are native to Minnesota and grow along the trail. Many parts of the trail are completely shaded by overhanging trees, making it perfect for exercise on days that are particularly warm.
WIldlife
You can catch a glimpse of wildlife during your time on the trail, particularly if you are quiet and still. Pheasant, partridge, and geese are among the birds you might view, and you could also see small animals like frogs and turtles. You may also see deer or other larger animals.
Railroad Markers
The trail was built on land that was designated for railroad use but then abandoned. If you have sharp eyes you can still see the railroad mile markers that were placed along the trail by the rail company.
Dog Walking
The trail is open to dog walkers as well. You must keep your pet on a leash at all times, and remember you must clean up after your dog.
Horseback Riding
There is a second part of the trail that is unpaved and can be used for horseback riding. Be sure you have the proper riding permit to bring your horse to the trail.
Snowmobiling
In the winter, bring out your snowmobile for a ride on the unpaved path. Snowmobiles must be properly registered.
The Douglas State Trail offers opportunities for families and other groups to spend time together while having fun outside. Before you visit the trail, stop and see us at Rochester Mazda, where you can see many vehicles you can use to carry your gear for your recreational adventures.
